November saw the release of the Portuguese-language edition of Swami Sri Yukteswar’s The Holy Science (A Ciência Sagrada). In this book, Paramahansa Yogananda’s Guru demonstrates, by explanation of parallel passages from the Hindu and Christian scriptures, the essential unity of the great religious teachings of East and West. With incomparable wisdom and discernment, Sri Yukteswar explains the universal evolution of consciousness, energy, and matter — the entire spectrum of experience that we call “life.” The author provides an authoritative foundation for a purely holistic view of man and the universe — and shows how that view supports the principles of natural living in body, mind, and soul. While rooted in the deepest truths of religion, this profound book yet offers practical advice for fulfillment in everyday living by delineating the physical, mental, moral, and spiritual principles that govern the expansion of human consciousness.
A special release event was held in São Paulo, Brazil (photos right and below). Hundreds of people packed the auditorium of one of the city’s largest and most prestigious hotels as Brother Devananda, a monk of Self-Realization Fellowship for more than 40 years, spoke about The Holy Science, as well as the science of Kriya Yoga. The Holy Science release event was courtesy of Omnisciência, distributor of SRF books for all of Brazil.
Burgeoning interest in the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda in Brazil is demonstrated by the fact that this title brings to fifteen the number of SRF books published in the Portuguese language.
During the week leading up to Christmas, the Spanish-language edition of Paramahansa Yogananda’s masterwork, The Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You (La Segunda Venida de Cristo), was reported as the number one best seller in Spain in the non-fiction category — and as the second bestselling book in all other categories — as announced by the prominent news agency EFE.
The source for the list of best sellers was Casa del Libro, the largest bookstore chain in Spain, which carries 1,600,000 titles and hosts the most-visited online bookstore in the Spanish-speaking world (www.casadellibro.com). At right La Segunda Venida de Cristo is displayed in the main display window of Casa del Libro’s prestigious branch in central Madrid.
In what will become a three-volume set in Spanish, this first volume of La Segunda Venida de Cristo was released last Summer, and the two remaining volumes in Spanish will be published over the next few years.
This is not the first time for SRF titles to be listed in bestselling categories by Casa del Libro. Some other recent high-ratings include:
• In May 2009, the Spanish translation of Autobiography of a Yogi (Autobiografía de un yogui) was number one in the most-sold paperback books in non-fiction, and Paramahansa Yogananda was the number one bestselling author.
• In November 2009, The Yoga of Jesus (El Yoga de Jesus) was third place in the best sellers in non-fiction, while Paramahansa Yogananda was again the number one best-selling author.
• In May 2010, El Yoga de Jesús was the second-place best-selling book in all categories — a result reported by the EFE news agency and subsequently appearing in different online newspapers throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
