2015 International Day of Yoga

May 5, 2015

Sunday, June 21, 2015, marks the first official UN-sponsored International Day of Yoga—an occasion to honor the ancient science of Kriya Yoga, which Paramahansa Yogananda introduced to the West almost a century ago. In support of this event—and to offer spiritual seekers who are new to meditation the opportunity to begin their own practice—many Self-Realization Fellowship Temples, Centers, and Meditation Groups around the world will conduct guided meditations for members and the general public on that day.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi first proposed an International Day of Yoga to the General Assembly of the United Nations in September 2014, at which time he stated, “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being.” More recently a website for this commemorative day was launched; it featured, on the day of its launching, an image of Paramahansa Yogananda as the homepage ‘Yogic Icon,’ with the wording “Paramahansa Yogananda is one of the pioneer Indian Yoga masters who introduced meditation and Kriya Yoga to the western world through his book Autobiography of a Yogi.

AWAKE Screenings: As mentioned in the SRF April eNewsletter, the International Day of Yoga will also be commemorated by SRF and CounterPoint Films by a campaign to “gather” 108 additional screenings of AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda in theatres across the U.S. by June 21, 2015. All followers and friends of Paramahansaji are encouraged to join in these efforts—either by signing up to host a screening in your city, or by reserving your ticket in advance if a screening is already scheduled near you. See the film’s website, www.awaketheyoganandamovie.com/screenings for more details about the Gathr program of bringing the film to a theater near you.

AWAKE Soundtrack: To further honor the International Day of Yoga, we are pleased announce that the CD soundtrack to AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda will be available for purchase beginning mid-June. This highly anticipated soundtrack features the voice of Paramahansa Yogananda heard in the film. It provides a meditative and soulful experience, with atmospheric music taken from Michael Mollura and Vivek Maddala’s magical score, special tracks from Alanis Morissette, Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, and Anoushka Shankar. Please visit the film’s website for details on the CD release date.
