AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda
Begins Its Journey Around the World

July 17, 2015

Community Screenings

AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda is proving to be an effective messenger of Paramahansa Yogananda’s life and teachings, awakening thousands to a deeper connection with the divinity within themselves: a springboard into a deeper spiritual search. As expressed by one viewer of this feature-length documentary film, “During the movie, I experienced a feeling of expansion of consciousness, love, darshan—a ‘speeding up’ of my spiritual endeavors.”

International Community Screenings Now Available

CounterPoint Films, who collaborated with Self-Realization Fellowship in producing the film AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda, is now making it possible for the many friends and members who have expressed a keen interest in the film to license a Community Screening DVD of AWAKE.

With international theatrical distribution of AWAKE now begun (most recently in Australia, Greece, India, Israel, and Afghanistan), SRF members as well as others interested in spirituality and yoga may be glad to learn that community groups can also now hold screenings of the film around the world. Meditation centers, yoga studios, places of worship, yoga festivals, community centers, and similar groups are now able to purchase a special Community Screening License for showing of the film in a non-theatrical venue.

At present, the Community License DVD is available only in English, but by August a version with subtitles in Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, French, Dutch, and Japanese is scheduled to be ready. (Within the U.S. and Canada, licensees can hold unlimited public performances of the film at a single location; outside the U.S. and Canada, community groups can license the film for up to five screenings at a single location.)  For more information, please visit the AWAKE website.

International Film Festival Activity

Dharamsala Film Festival Audience AwardIn international film festivals, AWAKE has now been featured at the Tel Aviv Spirit Film Festival in Israel (in October 2014) and also at the Herat International Women’s Film Festival in Afghanistan (in November of 2014). This month and again in August, the film will show at the New Zealand International Film Festival. In June the film was featured at the 2015 Dharamsala Film Festival in India, attended by an audience hailing from 31 countries on six continents. Here it received the festival’s Audience Award —apparently, an appropriate accolade for that particular showing. A report from the festival organizers revealed that, due to the audience’s attunement, a technical glitch half-way through the screening of the film proved to be no discouragement; the audience just chanted Aum while waiting until the projectionist resolved the issue.

International Theatrical Runs

Greek Awake PosterTens of thousands of moviegoers in some 287 cities in North America have viewed the biopic in theatres and at film festivals since its debut last October. These numbers continue to grow as the film now makes its way to other lands around the globe.

The film’s premiere in Australia coincided with the first-ever International Day of Yoga on June 21, where it played to a sold-out audience at Sydney’s Dendy Newtown Cinema. The event was honored by the attendance of the Consul General of India in Sydney, Mr. Sunjay Sudhir, who introduced the film and spoke about Paramahansa Yogananda’s pioneering role in bringing yoga to the West. The film rolled out to theaters across Australia in the first week of July and ranked as one of the top 10 limited-release films at the box office in its first weekend of screenings!

In Greece the film opened to an enthusiastic audience in May, where more than 1,000 people viewed the film in the first four days of its screening.

AWAKE’s next premiere is in France, slated for Fall 2015.
