AWAKE Selected One of the “Top 10 Heartwarming Films of 2014”

February 12, 2015

2015 Awake posterAWAKE: The Life of Yogananda—the feature documentary produced by CounterPoint Films with cooperation from Self-Realization Fellowship—started 2015 on a very promising note, being named in The Huffington Post as one of the ten most heartwarming films of 2014 by film expert Kate Neligan. Its popularity was underscored by box office ticket sales—which now surpass the one million dollar mark, a feat that few documentaries ever realize in a given year.

Throughout the U.S. and Canada, the film has played in more than 120 theaters with traditional runs of a week or longer. From metropolitan areas to small towns, most of these theatres extended their runs—some up to three months!—or scheduled encore screenings at later dates.

2015 Awake Screening in Oregon

Several full-house screenings of AWAKE in Corvallis, Oregon, organized through Gathr, took place in January.

In addition to the 120 theatrical runs, more than 225 one-show screenings have taken place (or more likely will) in communities all over the United States through Gathr, a theatrical on-demand service. Many of these sold out, necessitating additional screenings or longer runs via traditional theatrical bookings. Looking forward, more than 200 theaters have requests for future Gathr screenings, and requests are expected to continue through most of 2015. These one-show bookings can still be requested by individuals, theaters, or organizations, regardless of whether or not the film has already played in that area. Learn how you can request a screening.

Foreign language screenings of the film are currently in development, with the first—in French—to take place in Montreal, Canada, towards the end of February. The upcoming year includes plans for releasing the film internationally, as well as colleges and universities, museums, and elsewhere. We look forward to sharing with you more AWAKE news—as well as relating inspiring stories about the impact that this film has had on so many spiritual seekers.

Those involved in these activities have been uplifted to witness the reverence and enthusiasm that audiences of all ages and backgrounds have expressed for Paramahansa Yogananda and his impact on the world, as depicted in the film. This influence is expressed in the words of Huffington Post journalist Kate Neligan, “For those who haven't read Autobiography of a Yogi this film introduces you to a spiritual genius and legend….It's a great biopic that reminds us about the power of yoga and how visionaries like Yogananda have helped all of humanity move forward.”
